Although FirstBank has been in Colorado since 1963, its first
Evergreen location was
opened in 1997. It was an
easy fit for the company, which has a strong
focus on service to its local communities.
“Our foundation has been built on this
community support as well as the importance we place on providing quality customer service,” says Liz Pike, banking officer at the Evergreen branch. “Evergreen is a
great fit for this philosophy; our values are
certainly reflected by many of the local businesses here.”
One example of FirstBank’s community
involvement is the annual Colorado Gives
Day. FirstBank is a founding partner of this
fundraising event, which is in its fourth
year. The event raised over $15 million in
2012 and the money raised during this event
goes directly to local nonprofits.
Pike credits the Evergreen Chamber for
helping FirstBank become more involved in
the community. “It has also enabled many
of our employees to make valuable connections to businesses and individuals here in
Evergreen,” says Pike. “We have had the
pleasure of working in collaboration with
the Chamber and other local businesses on
many occasions, and are proud to be a part
of the strong local economy in Evergreen.”

This monthly, large-format, glossy mag- azine is a favorite among locals, who
often keep it as a coffee table piece. For 21
years, Colorado Serenity has been focused
on sharing the stories of anything inspira-
tional about local people and places. When
asked what he loves most about Evergreen,
Publisher Doug Kinzy says, “the small town
atmosphere and living at 9,000 feet in the
Rocky Mountains.” Kinzy adds that Ever-
green is a good place to do business because
the residents are “generally very sophis-
ticated, well educated and love living in
Evergreen.”
Since moving to Evergreen in 1977, Kinzy
says he has found that more than any other
place, the people who move here say they
have found their own feeling of Serenity. He
tries to capture those feelings in the many
departments of the publication, which cover
everything from the local art scene and
home décor to advertorials, where busi-
nesses write about themselves.
Although Kinzy is a longtime resident of
Evergreen, he doesn’t just rely on his own
immediate connections when it comes to
business. “We do a lot of business at the
Chamber mixers,” he says. Now you know
where the locals go to grow their business!

In 1955 in Indian Hills, the need for a source of information for a growing mountain community gave rise to a
monthly newspaper called Smoke Signals.
Backed financially by the Indian Hills Fire
Department, Smoke Signals started on a
shoestring but grew steadily along with the
community.
In October 1958, Smoke Signals became
the Canyon Courier, an independent weekly
newspaper.
No one could have predicted in the late
’50s how this entire area would grow in population, until finally many mountain communities had distinct identities and sizable
populations of their own.
Today, the Courier focuses more tightly
on the Evergreen area, which has grown
to become a large, thriving and economically diverse community. Our three sister
newspapers, the High Timber Times (
Conifer), the Clear Creek Courant (Clear Creek
County) and the Columbine Courier (South
Jeffco) now report on areas that the original
Canyon Courier sought to cover.
Our goal as newspapers remains the
same, however: unite our communities
with a reliable and local source of information, advertising and online content.

Kaiser Permanente has delivered health care and coverage to Coloradans for
more than 40 years. “We have more than
6,000 employees in Colorado, and many of
them live in Jefferson County, including
Evergreen,” says Evergreen Medical Office
Administrator Kraig Schmidt. “We heard
from our members and employees that they
would like to have Kaiser Permanente med-
ical offices closer to home, so we listened.
Three years ago we opened up our Evergreen
medical offices at 2942 Evergreen Parkway,
near the intersection of Lewis Ridge Road
and Evergreen Park way.”
Schmidt says that Kaiser Permanente’s
local team truly appreciates the area. “Ever-
green is a very tight-knit community. It’s the
kind of place where you know all of your
neighbors and where you can ride your bike
to and from work and see at least a dozen
people you know along the way. Our nurses,
physicians and staff in our Kaiser Perma-
nente Evergreen medical offices have the
unique opportunity to get to know their
patients. That’s one of the things I know
many of us love about working here.”
Schmidt adds that, like the care Kaiser
Permanente provides to its members, the
Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce has
helped Kaiser grow as it continues to become
a healthy business in Evergreen. “Evergreen
has a tremendously active business community. The chamber helped us get settled
here in Evergreen and has continued to foster connections in the community. It has
helped us to become more aware of opportunities to better serve Evergreen’s residents.”
